Go, Have Fun And Nail It !

Mani Sharma is a 2012-13 RTV alumna and is currently working with Red FM, Indore as a Radio Jock. She believes that everything can be changed but nothing can be changed until faced.

Kiss it folks! I mean keep it simple and short. Blabbering stuff is a strict no no. Do not be pretentious and it is needless to say that current affairs should be on your finger tips. Be confident and maintain an eye contact with the interviewer to make a good impression.

Presentation is key too so dress smartly. And before I forget guys, unless you are being interviewed for EJ, use the language you are most comfortable with and can express freely.

Also do not beat around the bush and be to the point. Facts are sacred and opinion is free, express it but learn to listen and respect what others have to say.

Enough of the gyan, make the most of this opportunity and kill it!

BAJATE RAHO !

Let Not Pressure Get The Better Of You

Saloni Tandon is a Radio and TV Journalism 2012-2013 alumna. She worked with The Times of India as a correspondent cum copy editor in the entertainment and lifestyle beat and has over 100 features and celebrity interview bylines under her name. Currently, she is working as a communications manager in an NGO and is a freelance journalist cum fashion and sports blogger.

First things first – many congratulations on cracking the entrance test and making it till this stage of the selection process! Now, be rest assured that if you have made it till here, the ultimate goal of studying at IIMC is definitely within sight!

To surpass the interview and the piece to camera rounds, what you need is 70% mental preparation and 30% factual accuracy. They have already tested the knowledge that they wanted to; now they want to know how clear and stable you are about your views.

Point number one: DO NOT buckle under pressure. The panel will try to create a very stressful situation for you (much like the newsroom), where they might totally dismiss your views or put forward extreme counter-arguments. Be clear with your thoughts and be very vocal about why you are taking a certain stand. It’s not necessary to agree with them. What is absolutely necessary is clarity of thoughts and strength of character to stand by your opinion on a certain matter. At IIMC, it’s absolutely okay to be opinionated, as long as you have valid reasons to add strength to your opinions. Be calm, be confident and be sure of what you’re speaking.

Moving to the theory bit – what personally helped me the most were the primetime debates on news channels. Watching them every day without fail greatly increased my perspective and helped me visualize prospective angles on every story that is developing within the country. Having your own stand is good; knowing the other person’s stand is even better. Watching these debates also provokes thoughts within you, which you wouldn’t have anticipated by just going through news websites or news papers. Since you’re applying for TV, it’s always better to show allegiance and familiarity to that medium!

The piece-to-camera round was something that was relatively new to me, since my graduation was in business studies. I wouldn’t deny that the entire studio and camera setup can be a bit overwhelming, but don’t let it get the better of you. All you need for this round is composure, composure and more composure. Typically, you will be given a topic at the end of your interview to speak on for 30 seconds. Normally, they give you something that is related to your interests and forte, but that’s never a compulsion. Make a mental note of the points that you have to make. Do not try to frame sentences mentally and mug them up – that is something that will never work. But if you’re clear about the points that you will address, you should surpass this round without a glitch.

All in all – relax, have faith in your ability and let that confidence reflect on your face!

All the best :)

Good Times Are Ahead

Prateek  Joshi | I have graduated from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication with a Post Graduate Diploma in Radio and Television Journalism, 2013-14. I am an engineer and I graduated in IT from Amity University, Noida.  I have worked for Wipro Technologies for about a year before I made a transition into the domain of Mass Communication. I am currently placed as a Trainee Account Associate at AdfactorsPR, Mumbai.  I love reading conspiracy theories; I am an avid movie fan and worship Robert De Niro and Kevin Spacey.

My heartiest congratulations to all for clearing the written test. I can truly understand how it feels as it was exactly a year ago when I was going through the Entrance Counseling portal to amass all the advice I could for the GD-PI round. I was extremely nervous and the reasons were genuine. Being an engineer, and not a good one, I was clueless as to how would I go about preparing for the interview. My traumatic (pun intended) experiences of numerous engineering entrance tests were giving me nightmares. But, trust me; this last hurdle doesn't require the aspirant to be an Einstein to clear it. JUST BE yourself, they are looking for YOU and not some wannabe!!

To clear the interview, your fundamentals should be crystal clear and by that I mean apart from knowledge of the subjects you should be absolutely sure as to why you want get into journalism. Read as much as you can and read good stuff. Do not miss reading the newspapers even for a day. And by reading, I mean READING IT and not scanning the headlines.

There will be two phases of the interview round: the evaluation and the Piece to Camera (P2C). The general evaluation round will comprise of the H.O.D or a faculty and a guest media personality who will assess you with few current affairs questions. This will be followed by the P2C wherein you will be given a random topic that is in limelight. P2C is very crucial as it can either crack jackpot or crack the pot altogether. Practice reading news items in front of mirror like a reporter does on news channels. Make yourself as fluent as you can and although one is bound to get nervous under such circumstances, do not reflect the nervousness in your presentation.

That’s it!!

Ummm, what else??.........

ENJOY your preparation! Yes, I am being absolutely literal. IIMC is an experience of a lifetime. For me it started the very moment I commenced with my preparation and the inebriation hasn't worn off – it never will.

As for the interview, you are almost there so don’t take your selection for granted and go for it full throttle, no half measures. Remember, once you get through this minor remaining impediment, 10 “jabroni beating, pie eating, trail blazing, eye brow raising” months are waiting for you!!

ALL THE BEST fellas!!

Know Your News For The Interview Round

Yashika Khanna (more commonly known as Yashika Totlani from her IIMC days) was a student of Radio and Television journalism and graduated in 2010. Previously an auditor with Ernst and Young, she topped her batch at IIMC and started working as a Production Trainee with Headlines Today. After spending 2.5 years with them and being promoted to the designation of an Assistant Producer, she moved on to work as a Senior Copy Editor with IBNLive.com. She is currently assisting her husband in his business-school journey in USA and working alongside as a freelance wedding photographer in Illinois.

When I stepped into my Radio and Television program interview round in 2009, I was nervous because I knew that I had to bag this gig. Stuck in my job as an auditor, this career shift was essential for my emotional well-being. I had spent nearly six months pouring over newspaper editorials (I read three newspapers at that point – The Times of India, Hindustan Times and The Indian Express) and watching uncountable television news discussions at night (my favourite being Rajdeep Sardesai’s India at 9 on CNN-IBN). Before I stepped in for the interview, I had spent a full day going over the details of all recent news stories and memorizing the names of my cabinet ministers.

The summer of 2009 had also seen the great Indian General Elections (just like this year) and I knew that I needed to have detailed knowledge about the politics of each major Indian state (‘major’ being a denomination of the number of seats). I had written blog posts about it and the pieces has in turn helped hone and sharpen my knowledge about the election outcome. So basically, I ensured that all the ground-work was in place before the interview. Also, upon conversations with an alumni, I had been told that the institute basically tests you for two things – first, a command over the English (or Hindi, as is your case) language and second, the multitude of your personal opinions.

I, and a bunch of other aspirants were seated in a room on the day of the interview. Our documents were verified sequentially and one by one, we were sent to the main room where the interviews were being held. During that waiting time, my heart literally came to my mouth in anticipation. When my turn finally came, I picked up my paperwork and headed to the interview room. A small part of me jumped up with joy when I saw CNN-IBN’s Suhasini Haider sitting there with Professor Raghavachari and one other person. The excitement ensured that I gave a good interview. Questions, expectedly, were mostly centred around the general elections. I was asked who the Chief Minister of Orissa was, what I knew about the outcome of the elections and in my opinion, how would Manmohan Singh fare as a second time Prime Minister.

I was asked about why I am making a career shift to journalism (and I had a pretty convincing answer for that question), and what were my aspirations as a future journalist. Suhasini was kind with her interrogation, but Professor Raghavachari was quite thorough (but don’t let that scare you, because he turned out to be a complete sweetheart once we started the course). I also took the interview time to mention a blog that I frequently wrote for the CNN-IBN news website which carried my latest write-up about the general elections. That seemed to do the trick for most people on the panel.

After a long string of current affairs questions, I was asked to go into an adjoining room (connected to the main interview room with a video link and TV), look into the installed camera and give a 2-minute PTC (piece-to-camera), pretending to be a reporter and reporting on the elections outcome from Tamil Nadu. I had never done anything like this before, but I did somehow manage to stand there, hold the mike, and blurt out all that I knew about TN. Mirror sessions pretending to be a reporter with a comb in my hand helped with this part! Thankfully, a few days later the list of admitted students was released and I was on it.

My advice to all aspiring students is to first, have a real passion for journalism to crack your IIMC interview. Second, do your homework and know your news inside out. Hard facts are very important. Third, dress and look your best always. This skill will also be helpful in making strides in your career as a journalist. And lastly, always be confident and wear a smile.

All the best! And remember that it’s not that tough!
