लिखित परीक्षा में सफल साथियों को मेरी तरफ से शुभकामनाएं. दिल में लगन हो और खुद पर विश्वास हो तो आईआईएमसी में प्रवेश आसान है. मैं जानता हूं कि आईआईएमसी में प्रवेश के लिए कितनी मेहनत करनी पड़ती है, कितना धैर्य रखना पड़ता है.

अब बस एक कदम दूर हैं आप अपनी मंजिल से. जिनका इस वर्ष नहीं हो पाया है या जो इंटरव्यू में सफल नहीं हो पाते हैं वो हताश न हों क्योंकि अगर आपको अपने ऊपर विश्वास है तो आप बगैर आईआईएमसी आए भी सफल पत्रकार बन सकते हैं. इंटरव्यू में सफलता के लिए आपको तीन चीजों पर ध्यान देना होगा.

- आपका आत्मविश्वास

- आपका अध्ययन एवं ज्ञान

- आपकी अभिव्यक्ति

सब कुछ सही है. आपके पास हर तरह का ज्ञान है. आपके पास अनुभव भी है लेकिन इन चीजों का फायदा तभी मिलेगा जब आप इंटरव्यू के दौरान खुद को अच्छे से अभिव्यक्त कर पाएं अन्यथा.

कुछ कड़वी सच बताता हूं. शायद आपको अच्छा न भी लगे. अगर आप टीवी के सफल पत्रकारों को देखकर या एंकर बनने या फिर प्लेसमेंट के लिए आईआईएमसी में प्रवेश पाना चाहते हैं तो ये आपका भ्रम है. इससे बेहतर आप दूसरों को मौका दे दें. ये सब मेहनत और परिश्रम से आगे जाकर मिलेगा. आईआईएमसी में आपको खुद को निखारने का एक प्लेटफॉर्म मिलता है. इंटरव्यू देते समय इन चीजों का ध्यान रखें.

- आप जिस जगह से आते हैं, उसके बारे में अवश्य जान लें. वहां के सामाजिक, राजनीतिक, ऐतिहासिक और दूसरी रोचक चीजों के बारे में आपसे पूछा जा सकता है.

- आपसे आपके बारे में पूछा जा सकता है. आपके बारे में जानने के बाद आपसे ही संबंधित कुछ और प्रश्न किए जा सकते हैं.

- जो भी बोलें, स्पष्ट बोलें, सच बोलें और सरल बोलें.

- आप वहां ज्ञान देने का रिस्क न लें. इंटरव्यू ले रहे लोग आपसे ज्यादा ज्ञानी हैं.

- पत्रकारिता क्यों करना चाहते हैं, ये सबसे कॉमन सवाल है. अपनी समझ बनाकर जाएं.

- किसी सवाल का जवाब तभी दें जब आपको अच्छे से आता हो. इंटरव्यू के दौरान हां में हां न मिलाएं. वो कई बार आपके आत्मविश्वास को चेक करने के लिए गलत बातें भी बोल सकते हैं.

- आपकी समझ, आपकी सोच और आपका व्यवहारिक ज्ञान ही आपका एंट्री कार्ड है. बाकी सारे ट्रंप कार्ड फेल हो जाते हैं.

- जिस प्रश्न का जवाब आपके पास न हो उसके लिए आप शालीनता के साथ मना कर दें. ये पॉजिटिव चीज है. इसके लिए नेगेटिव मार्किंग नहीं होगी.

- KISS (KEEP IT SIMPLE AND SORT) फॉर्मूला को अपनाएं. यही आपकी सफलता की कुंजी है.

- लिखित परीक्षा से आपको चुना गया है इसलिए खुद को किसी से कम न समझें.

सुनियोजित तरीके से तैयारी करिए और अपने ऊपर भरोसा रखिए. फिर आईआईएमसी क्या सारे दरवाजे आपके लिए खुले होंगे.

Stop Freaking Out

First off, congratulations for making it to the interview round. Now, if you eat, sleep and drink news and social media, enjoy reading and writing, and are any or all types of crazy, you fit the bill for IIMC.

Here are a few suggestions to help you reach that beautiful campus in JNU.

Stop freaking out: Firstly, stop freaking out. It’s just an interview. You made it till here. Pat yourself for it, and be confident. Also, a lot of English journalism aspirants are not sure if they would have a GD. In 2012, we directly had interviews. No GD. So, be prepared in case that happens.

Read magazines: Eat, sleep and drink news magazines (and of course papers, but for last-minute preparation, magazines can do wonders) for last-minute revision.

If politics is not your strong point, don’t worry: If you are not passionate about politics as you are about other things such as sports or fashion, don’t worry. Journalism is a wide field and there is space for everyone here. Of course, being up-to date with current affairs is necessary, but, at the same time, if you like other thing, don’t shy away from talking about them in your interview.

Show off: A little show off never killed anybody. If you don’t tell the interviewers what all you have done in the past, how would they know what you are capable of? So make sure you mention about that internship you did a year ago, which you otherwise thought was useless. Also, if you have any kind of published work, get it all with you and proudly share it with them.

Wear formals: During my time, not many people - especially girls - wore formals to the interview, except me. It made me stand out and worked in my favour. So, I’d suggest you to wear formals. Buy yourself a full-sleeved shirt to go with crisply ironed pants and hair neatly tied in a pony. Also, don’t forget the smile! Nobody likes talking to an expressionless face.

Prepare answers: Prepare answers to questions that you are expecting. Why do you want to get into journalism? Why did you choose journalism over AD/PR or vice versa? If you have work experience, why do you want to study when you can work? These are only a few. Think of more and be ready with the answers.

Make points: Give pointers wherever possible. They any day read better over your three-page long essays. Also, it is very important to stick to the word limit. If you have a 10-mark question, do not write more than a page. There is no competition to fill maximum sheets here.

Take notes: If you, like me, are not blessed with a great memory, make sure to jot down notes. Scribble whatever you read and read it when you are on your way to the college.

Outstation students, don’t worry: Getting thoughts such as, ‘Would Delhites get preference over me?” if you are an outstation student are common. However, I can assure you that if you are deserving, you will get through. Quick fact: Around 70 % of my classmates were not from Delhi.

And lastly, don’t be heartbroken if you don’t get through. A year later, you will be in the same, if not better, position if you work at a media house instead, as would be your IIMC friends.

मत सोचें कि चयन नहीं हुआ तो क्या होगा?

भारतीय जनसंचार संस्थान में नामांकन के लिए साक्षात्कार में महज कुछ दिन बचे हैं. ऐसे में मुझे 2010 के वो दिन याद आ रहे हैं जब मैं भी साक्षात्कार की तैयारी कर रहा था. सच में, बहुत मश्किल था उस पल को गुजारना. खैर, साक्षात्कार हुआ, मैं रेडियो एवं टेलीविजन पत्रकारिता विभाग के लिए चयनित हुआ. आज आकाशवाणी समाचार में बतौर समाचार संपादक काम कर रहा हूं.

साक्षात्कार के लिए चयनित साथियों से ये कहना चाहता हूं कि साक्षात्कार के लिए आत्मविश्वास से लबरेज होकर जाएं. यह सवाल दिमाग में नहीं आने दें कि अगर चयन नहीं हुआ तो क्या होगा? क्योंकि जैसे ही यह सवाल आपके दिमाग में आएगा, आत्मविश्वास डगमगाएगा और साक्षात्कार के दौरान आप सवालों को लेकर घबराहट महसूस करेंगे.

हम जब भी साक्षात्कार के लिए जाते हैं तो हमारे दिमाग में यह बात होती है कि साक्षात्कारकर्ता हमारी जानकारी को और जानकारी की गहराई को मापने की कोशिश करेगा. जबकि ऐसा नहीं है. लिखित परीक्षा पास करके आप यहां पहुंचे हैं यानी देश-दुनिया और पत्रकारिता की जानकारी आपको है. अब आप उन चीजों की मौखिक व्याख्या किस तरह करते हैं, जो बातें आप करते हैं उसके पक्ष या विपक्ष में क्या तर्क आप पेश करते हैं, और जो भी करते हैं वो कितने आत्मविश्वास के साथ करते हैं, इसी की परीक्षा साक्षात्कार में होती है.

अगर किसी सवाल का जवाब आपके पास नहीं है तो शालीनता से स्वीकार कर लें. यह दिखाने की कोशिश न करें कि आपको आता है मगर आप बयां नहीं कर पा रहे हैं या अभी-अभी भूल गए हैं. और हां, इस सवाल का जवाब तो बिल्कुल अच्छे से सोचकर जाएं कि आप पत्रकार क्यों बनना चाहते हैं?

अभी दो-तीन दिन का समय आपके पास है तो एक सप्ताह के अखबारों को अच्छे से पढ़ें और उसका विश्लेषण करें. ये तो बताना बहुत मुश्किल है कि आप क्या-क्या पढ़ें फिर भी केन्द्र की नई सरकार के सामने चुनौतियां, नई सरकार से उम्मीदें, उपराष्ट्रपति की चीन यात्रा, विदेश मंत्री की बांगलादेश यात्रा, प्रधानमंत्री की भूटान यात्रा, दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय नामांकन विवाद, साईं पूजा विवाद जैसे कई विषय हैं जिस पर आप गहराई से नजर रख सकते हैं.

चलते-चलते बस इतना कहूंगा कि आप एक अच्छे पत्रकार हैं तभी आपको साक्षात्कार के लिए बुलाया गया है. आत्मविश्वास बनाएं रखें.

Preparing For The IIMC Interview

First of all congratulations on clearing the written test. Now the next step would be to prepare for the interview. I have a few tips which should come in handy during your interview.

Read the day’s newspaper: Give special emphasis on the lead story. Do some research on the lead story. Try to formulate opinions based on facts  by referring other newspapers and the internet of course.

Current affairs: Keep yourself up to date with all the latest happenings. Keep an eye on news that is trending. An easy way to do that is to visit news.google.com. You’ll find all trending news items here. If you’re already doing it then you are on the right track.

Sound genuinely interested and not desperate: What I mean here is to act normal and not over exaggerate.

Here is an example which will help you understand what I mean:

A)  Sir I’ve  always wanted to be a journalist. Whenever I see Barkha Dutt reporting, I imagine myself in her place. I want to bring great changes to the society by becoming a journalist. I want to empower the oppressed.

B)  I am intrigued by the process. I love to keep myself update with the current affairs. My area of interest is International affairs. I want to pursue this interest at a higher level by becoming a journalist.

Hope you’ve got my point.

Keep calm: It’s an interview not an interrogation. Be clear in what you want to say. You can always disagree with something an interviewee says, provided you have solid enough reason.

Fake victory sign:  This is something I saw on nat geo , hence the credit goes to them. While you are waiting for your turn to come, just take a moment for yourself and go somewhere no one can watch you, ideally the washroom and raise your hands as if you’ve won a race or scored a goal.

This fake victory expression reduces stress and helps you perform better.

Finally:  All the best, hope to see you in one of the centers of IIMC. And even if you don’t get through, remember, great journalists have come up without any formal training.

खूब पढ़िए और ईमानदार रहिए

विनम्रता चतुर्वेदी हिन्दी पत्रकारिता विभाग के 2012-13 बैच से हैं. सीएनबीसी आ‌वाज में इंटर्नशिप के बाद एनबीटी, लखनऊ की लॉन्चिंग टीम का हिस्सा बनीं. फिलहाल एनबीटी, दिल्ली में कॉपी एडिटर.

सबसे पहले लिखित परीक्षा क्वॉलिफाई करने के लिए बधाई. आप देश के सबसे अच्छे शिक्षण संस्थानों में से एक का हिस्सा बनने से बस चंद कदम दूर हैं. ये छोटी सी दूरी बस थोड़ी सी समझदारी से पूरी की जा सकती है. यूं तो किसी भी इंटरव्यू का कोई सेट फॉर्मेट नहीं होता, लेकिन सभी एक-दूसरे से कुछ अलग और कुछ समान होते है.

सबसे पहले बात सामान्य सवालों की जो पूछी ही जाएंगी. हम अक्सर अपने नाम, घर-परिवार और इलाके के बारे में जानते तो बहुत कुछ हैं, लेकिन इस पर इंटरव्यू के लायक तैयारी नहीं करके जाते. ध्यान रखिए, ये सवाल ही एंट्रेंस गेट हैं. अगर इनका जवाब देने में हिचकिचाहट हुई तो आगे के सवालों में कॉन्फिडेंस डोल जाएगा. मसलन, अगर आप उत्तराखंड के किसी गांव के रहने वाले हैं तो आपको वहां की खेती-बाड़ी, जलवायु वगैरह के बारे में भी पता होना चाहिए. इन सवालों का जवाब चाव से दें. हो सकता है आगे के सवाल भी यहीं से उठें. घर के सदस्यों के बारे में भी पूछा जा सकता है. कम से कम शब्दों में अपने पारिवारिक बैकग्राउंड को बताएं.

अब बारी हैं उन सवालों की जिनके लिए आईआईएमसी मशहूर है. सबसे बड़ा प्रश्न, पत्रकारिता क्यों करना चाहते हैं? किसी किताब में इसका जवाब नहीं मिलेगा. आप वही बताइए जो आप महसूस करते हैं. आपकी सोच यथार्थ के करीब होनी चाहिए. ये तो कतई मत कहिएगा कि मैं क्रांतिकारी टाइप कुछ करना चाहता हूं. दुनिया बदलना चाहता हूं. वगैरह वगैरह. इस सवाल के लिए जटिल जवाब देने के बदले छोटा सा प्रभावशाली जवाब दीजिए.

इसके बाद एक संभावित सवाल हो सकता है कि पत्रकारिता में किस फील्ड में जाना चाहते हो? यानी पहले तो ये कि डेस्क पर या फील्ड में. अगर फील्ड में तो किस बीट या क्षेत्र में दिलचस्पी है. हो सकता है आप में से कुछ के पास इसका जवाब न हो, लेकिन अगर है तो इंटरव्यू में बताना न भूलें. अगर डेस्क देखना है तो बिजनेस, स्पोर्टस, एंटरटेनमेंट या जेनरल न्यूज.

हर क्षेत्र में दिलचस्पी है कहने का एक मतलब ये भी निकाला जा सकता है कि किसी में भी दिलचस्पी नहीं है. ये महज शौक है. जमाना स्पेशलाइजेशन का है, इसलिए अपनी पसंदीदा बीट बता दें. अगर स्पोर्ट्स अच्छा लगता है तो बता दें कि भविष्य में स्पोर्ट्स रिपोर्टर बनना चाहते हैं. इससे फायदा ये होगा कि इंटरव्यूअर को आप अपने पाले में ले आएंगे. फिर वो आपसे स्पोर्ट्स के सवाल बरसा देंगे. ध्यान रहे, पसंदीदा फील्ड बताने के बाद आप पीछे नहीं हट सकते इसलिए पसंद जाहिर करने से पहले खुद को नाप-तौल लें. पूरी गहराई से पढ़ कर जाएं. पढ़ने का कोई विकल्प नहीं है.

पूरा का पूरा इंटरव्यू आपकी जागरूकता और जिज्ञासा खंगालेगा. देश-दुनिया, राजनीति, इकोनॉमी, खेल और लोकल खबरों को ध्यान से पढ़ें और घटना-घटनाक्रम याद रखें. ग्रैजुएशन मास कॉम में है तो जर्नलिज्म के बेसिक सवाल भी पूछे जा सकते हैं. किसी अन्य सब्जेक्ट से ग्रैजुएट हैं तो उसकी भी जानकारी होनी चाहिए. हॉबी से जुड़े सवालों के जवाब संक्षिप्त रखें.

इन सबके ऊपर. पूरे इंटरव्यू में सही मात्रा में कॉन्फिडेंस बनाए रखें. आपकी विचारधारा कोई भी हो उसे लॉजिकली जस्टिफाई करें. जवाब ईमानदार होने चाहिए. साक्षात्कारकर्ता को सवाल पूरा करने दें. पहले जवाब दिया तो दिग्गजों को हर्ट होगा ना दोस्त. कोई जवाब नहीं आए तो सॉरी बोलने में देरी न करें. चिल रहिए, बढ़िया सीवी बनाइएं, पूरे इंटरव्यू में कोशिश करिए कि सवाल आपकी दिलचस्पी से जुड़े हों. इंटरव्यूअर को बार-बार अपने पाले में लाइए. वेल ड्रेस होकर इंट्री और बढ़िया स्माइल के साथ थैंक्यू बोलकर एग्जिट. बस फिर क्या है. आईआईएमसी आपको वेलकम करेगा.

Fold Your Sleeves And Relax !

Yes you read it right. IIMC written is over. Half the job completed, so why to worry. It's just an interview, isn't it? If you are thinking there will be a 'hidden' meaning in my message, not to panic because there is one!

Confused or surprised after reading it all. Well that's what the interviews are all about. Jury throw surprises and try to put you off the pedal. They want to know whether you are amazing in self contradicting yourself or have crystal clear clarity of thoughts (and actions).

If I just rotate the clock one year back, I can tell you why 'fold your sleeves' is such a standout title for this message. I was part of one of the most dramatic interviews ever conducted in IIMC history.

It was second day of four days long interview session. I was dressed in formals - trousers & cool blue shirt. People around me were flipping through newspapers and were trying to get grip of every event, especially Uttarkhand flood disaster. I on the other hand was pretty relaxed and chatted around with few people (actually I made friends).

Since it was hot that day, I folded my sleeves. In the meantime, my name was called out. Outside the room, while I was waiting I pacified few girls who were panicking. They asked me whether I have worked before & have appeared in these kind of interviews. I said no and they were now more nervous than before. Before I forget let me tell you all, the guy standing in front of me had even rolled up tie around his neck. The dress code pressure on me had mounted and I was completely unaware of this.

My chance came, five panelists were present and it was past twelve. I greeted them afternoon and before I could ask for seat, the lady panelist retorted, "Is this the way to come for an interview with your sleeves folded? I smiled and glanced at everyone. I did not take the seat because I was yet not permitted but I also did not unfold my shirt (I will give you the reason why) but not now. I answered all the questions but I wasn't allowed to finish my answers. I had no qualms, I was all smile. My photo was clicked by one of the panelists, I was still unruffled. When results came out, my name was up there in first list.

To cut the long story short, what I did was pretty simply -

1. I was cool and calm before, during and after interview. I came with a thought process of enjoying the moment. I had nothing to lose, this mantra gave me strength.
2. The way I was welcomed, I knew it is going to be a 'stress interview'. I didn't back out rather I seeked fun in it.
3. I was honest with my words and answers. Since I was enjoying it all, it showed on my face.
4. I was not deeply immersed in newspaper that day because regular news update should be a habit, not a one day feed. Instead I interacted with people and learnt about their experiences and background. You learn from people. Mass Communication is all about people, don't forget.
5. And lastly, I did not unfold my shirt because I wasn't asked to! (If you read the above statement, it was a mere remark by lady panelist not an instruction). Secondly, I stuck to my decision. There is always something beyond the cover of any book. I knew they will read and enjoy it, which they did.

So be who you are, don't be a rebel but back your decisions. And you'll crack it with your folded sleeves and curved smile.

Let Not Pressure Get The Better Of You

Currently, she is working as a communications manager in an NGO and is a freelance journalist cum fashion and sports blogger.

First things first – many congratulations on cracking the entrance test and making it till this stage of the selection process! Now, be rest assured that if you have made it till here, the ultimate goal of studying at IIMC is definitely within sight!

To surpass the interview and the piece to camera rounds, what you need is 70% mental preparation and 30% factual accuracy. They have already tested the knowledge that they wanted to; now they want to know how clear and stable you are about your views.

Point number one: DO NOT buckle under pressure. The panel will try to create a very stressful situation for you (much like the newsroom), where they might totally dismiss your views or put forward extreme counter-arguments. Be clear with your thoughts and be very vocal about why you are taking a certain stand. It’s not necessary to agree with them. What is absolutely necessary is clarity of thoughts and strength of character to stand by your opinion on a certain matter. At IIMC, it’s absolutely okay to be opinionated, as long as you have valid reasons to add strength to your opinions. Be calm, be confident and be sure of what you’re speaking.

Moving to the theory bit – what personally helped me the most were the primetime debates on news channels. Watching them every day without fail greatly increased my perspective and helped me visualize prospective angles on every story that is developing within the country. Having your own stand is good; knowing the other person’s stand is even better. Watching these debates also provokes thoughts within you, which you wouldn’t have anticipated by just going through news websites or news papers. Since you’re applying for TV, it’s always better to show allegiance and familiarity to that medium!

The piece-to-camera round was something that was relatively new to me, since my graduation was in business studies. I wouldn’t deny that the entire studio and camera setup can be a bit overwhelming, but don’t let it get the better of you. All you need for this round is composure, composure and more composure. Typically, you will be given a topic at the end of your interview to speak on for 30 seconds. Normally, they give you something that is related to your interests and forte, but that’s never a compulsion. Make a mental note of the points that you have to make. Do not try to frame sentences mentally and mug them up – that is something that will never work. But if you’re clear about the points that you will address, you should surpass this round without a glitch.

All in all – relax, have faith in your ability and let that confidence reflect on your face!
