Focus on grammatically-correct content, not the length

Shaghil Bilali is a passout of 2005-06 English Journalism batch, and currently working with the Mail Today as a Senior Sports Reporter

Before suggesting you the tricks to crack IIMC entrance, I need a prompt reply from you. Why do you want to pursue journalism, and do you have the aptitude to take up this profession? If you think journalism is a smooth path to glamour and money, the best access to both the things is actually through bollywood/ modelling/ tv or a management degree from a reputed B-school, and there is no need to go to places like IIMC.

Like a glamorous job, which catapults you to stardom in a short period, journalism is a demanding profession, where you work like a chorus artist. Here you have to do a lot of hard work, and must possess energy and patience to grab attention. If you think all good journalists are born-talented, change your outlook in life, as it is their sheer hard work and its smart execution that take them to the top of the profession pyramid, be it Shekhar Gupta, Rajdeep Sardesai, Pranoy Roy or Punya Prasoon Bajpai. They all are well-read people and have applied their cultivated abilities to the best possible ways.

I think at the end of the day, it’s your aptitude that will help you survive in this profession. Aptitude will be the key factor which will spark passion once you enter the world of journalism. Now, how will you know whether you have it in you or not, is the next question?

The best way to know whether you have aptitude to do journalist is to notice the way you react when even the most common news reaches your ear.

If in general life, even a small and insignificant incident sparks your interest in knowing more about it, you have the aptitude to do journalism. If you have the ability to pick up small elements from a big story and react on that, you have the aptitude to do journalism.

If you can’t let the meanest things go unnoticed during the most unusual circumstances, you have the aptitude to do journalism. The news of fake 2011 World Cup trophy is a great example of what I am trying to say. When the entire nation was in the state of euphoria after India won the world cup, a journalist noticed the difference between the original ICC trophy and the one which was awarded to the Indian team, and broke one of the finest sports stories ever in India.

A Reuters journalist traveling with Edmond Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing during their historic Mt Everest ascent in 1953, and still beaten by a AP journalist by 13 minutes in newsbreak, is also a great example of how to click your mind at the right time.

If you have the hunger for news and it interests you the same way as food, you have the aptitude for journalism (a journalist in his first year and a journalist in his 20th year can break the same level of story, it’s all about his hunger for the news/information).

Second, you should be passionate about talking to people/sources and cultivate the best information from them. Also, these day’s you can’t pursue journalism with a conventional mindset. Demand and technology are changing so fast that you have to develop yourself as a multi-tasking journalist.

If you have these elements in your personality, you have the right to pursue journalism and mark my words, it will be a great fun for you.

Now, the first step to start journalism is to crack a journalism-school entrance.

As I have noticed since I joined English Journalism course in 2005, IIMC has one of the easiest entrance exams in India and it makes it more democratic, as everyone has the chance to make it.

Most of the questions in entrance are based on the incidents of past six months (general awareness). You should know why certain people/ places/ policies/ incidents were in news in the recent past. The best way to prepare for it is to go through the competitive magazines like Competition Success Review and Pratiyogita Darpan’s editions of last six months.

Elections in UP, Punjab, Uttrakhand, Goa & Manipur, Congress’s debacle in UP, CAG reports, Sachin Tendulkar’s 100th 100, 2G Scam, Anna movement, disputes over safety of nuclear power plants, anniversary of India’s world cup victory, Chinese President’s visit to India, BRICS summit, Iran nuclear issue, political unrest in West Asia, Revolutions in Arabic countries, Occupy wall street movement, US presidential election, death of Steve Jobs, names and the contributions of Nobel Prize winners in 2011, functions of UN agencies, Padma award winners, are some prominent topics to prepare for the entrance.

Always remember, the questions which carry the least marks will actually help you score the maximum in the entrance test. Since duration of test is two hours, try to answer the questions which carry one, two or three marks, as those are less time-consuming. Try to score as much as possible in entrance since it has 85% of the total marks, and it will compensate in case you fumble during the interview.

Since questions asked in entrance test are not tough, the focus of the examiner shifts on grammar. Try to write grammatical correct English/ Hindi in your answer sheets. While writing answers, focus on content and not the length.

Don’t lose confidence during the interview, and also not show fake confidence, as both the cases can spoil your chances. Avoid telling wrong facts and figures since the panelist are specialist in their field and it’s completely wastage of time to fool them.

As far ADPR aspirants are concerned, I can’t tell you much about the preparation, but as the one who has been dealing with the PR guys for last six years, what common thing I have noticed among the best PRs is their patience and passion to educate themselves.

If you get into IIMC, it will be a fun. People may have good or bad experience with the people there, but it’s the place which never disappoints you. Once you go to the IIMC you feel you belong to that place.

Wish you all the best for entrance and interview.
Shaghil Bilali

Focus on events happened in last six months

Prashanth Kumar Chiguru, currently working for The Asahi Shimbun in South Asia Bureau as Correspondent. Before that I Interned with The Hindu in New Delhi Bureau.

All the best for the aspirants who are appearing for IIMC entrance examination. I have appeared for the test in 2009 for English Journalism. It is simply test unlike other competitive exams, No need to be terrified much or get frightened with test and the Interview.

For English Journalism, candidates need to be updated on Current affairs particularly events happened in last six months. I only recommend to read only The Hindu newspaper, as it provides Information very precise and comprehensive.

Apart from that try to practice writing by observing the news articles especially the Intro Part. Don’t be verbose, avoid writing long sentences and presentation should be in simple and fair language.

In essay section, this time I expect questions related to Koodankulam Nuclear Plant and Anti-Nuclear struggle, Indo-Pak relations (Post Osama Death and recent Hafiz saeed Controversy), BRICS summit, Persecution of Tamils in Srilanka and UNHRC Geneva resolution, Emergence of Social Media and Internet Censorship by Indian Government, Importance and Relevance of Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Blogs etc) in related to Social Revolution’s and Mass Movements (Arab Spring and Team Anna Movement), 2G scam and its impact on UPA-II, Recent Assembly election in Five Indian states and the key role of regional parties in upcoming Presidential elections.

To refresh your minds, I suggest the aspirant to go through Competition Success Review Magazine( last six months issues).

Read News, Analyse News, Keep yourself abreast

Tanvi Sharma of RTV department (2005-06) is Assistant Reporter/ Researcher with the Los Angeles Times in New Delhi. Before moving to LAT Tanvi worked with NDTV.

I appeared for the test in 2005, the memories are fading as to what exactly the questions were, but surprisingly I knew everything on the question paper. The test was easy and tested the candidate's writing skills and current affairs.

The interview was simpler than the test since the panel only checks if the course in question falls in place with the candidate's aptitude and future goals while having him/her speak about life and aspirations.

News, its audience and the treatment of news is changing with every passing day. It would be hard to say what to expect from the question paper. However I believe, since the very time you decide to be a journalist, knowingly or unknowingly you start preparing for it, you become more aware, you read, you analyse. This is the only key to crack the entrance, Read News, Analyse News, just keep yourself abreast!

The mantra to clear RTV entrance exam: Just be on top of the news.

Have fun while appearing for the test and once through, beware you will make friends for a lifetime.

All the best…
Tanvi Sharma

Only people with passion should opt journalism

Nandagopal Rajan is English Journalism pass out of 2000-01 batch from IIMC, Dhenkanal. Nandagopal is currently associated with India Today Group as an Associate Editor.
 Hi,

My suggestion to aspirants is to not consider the IIMC test like other competitive exams. Yes, the process might be similar, but you need an aptitude in news and news sense to get through. If you are someone who has been reading newspapers and news magazines regularly and have a flair for writing you will not have much trouble clearing the test and the interview.

The test won't ask you things you are not supposed to know, so before you decide to rote all issued of competition success from the past decade, just think if all these things are relevant to you. For instance, you are supposed to know what is happening to our economy but the test might not ask you much on the intricacies of the Euro crisis.

One more thing, Please choose your centre carefully. I suggest you opt for Dhenkanal as it will increase your chances of making the cut. Moreover, you will be more focused on the course if you are in Dhenkanal. You will get one full year to hone your skills.

Also decide the language. If you are better in Hindi, then opt for the Hindi journalism course instead of the struggling with a career in English journalism later.

On a personal note, I think only people with a passion for journalism should opt for this field. Don't write the IIMC or any other journalism course test just because you have exhausted all your other options or are going to try out all possible options available.

All the best

You can never know where the Q come from?

Ajay Kumar Anand is English Journalism pass out of 2000 batch
Since being a foreign language student and later working in the same field, I am far away from being a journalist except writing a few travelogues and stories and some columns. Back then, I prepared for nothing and simply went to write the entrance test.

They simply test your writing skills and check whether you learn by rote or you really have an instinct to create the stuffs using your own thoughts and imagination and etc. Moreover, one needs a good insight into the current scenarios.

I prepared for nothing & my interview topics were related to German classical music composers of 16th century. So, you can never know where the questions come from?

Wish you all the best,

You are not going for a beauty contest

Mona Parthsarathi, 3rd ranked in 1998-99 batch of Hindi Journalism, currently working as a senior sports journalist with Press Trust of India.

Hi friends,

All the best for IIMC entrance test. No need to be panic at all, as you don't have to learn "rocket science" to pass this test. I hope all of you have been reading at least 2-3 prominent dailies regularly including The Hindu. Plus go through some quality current affairs magazines.

Dont opt "rattafication" as you have to have news sense to be a good journalist and ratta yaha kaam nahi karta. Written test is comparatively easier. The main task is interview & GD.

Being a sports journalist I can suggest you to go through the details of CWG scam, India's world cup win in 2011, Australia tour, Olympic preparations, Sports bill plus of course 100th international century of Sachin Tendulkar.

I belong to Indore and went for interview straight from the railway station. So all the talks about be presentable and emphasis on looks are rubbish. You are not going for a beauty contest. The interviewers will check your confidence level and knowledge of current affairs plus your perspective on relevant issues.

Keep in mind that your interview starts the moment you enter the room. Be confident, don't over express yourself and be focused.

All the very best
Mona Parthsarathi

The secret to crack the IIMC code

An alumnus of the 2001-02 batch, Rakesh Kumar Das is currently engaged as an Assistant Editor with the Seven Sisters Post based at Guwahati, Assam. Earlier, Rakesh was associated with the Hindustan Times and have worked at places like Patna and Kolkata before moving to Guwahati.
Preparing for any entrance test is not easy and when it comes to IIMC, the issue is more serious.

The secret to crack the IIMC code is simple but needs honesty and commitment from the candidate. Students tend to complain that they don't get time to read the newspapers in the morning and depend mostly on the electronic media for news and views. Even I believe that electronic media is fast but newspapers give us more facts and details. But then, let us not forget that every medium has its own value and importance.

Reading newspapers on a daily helps one gather knowledge and keep one self abreast with current affairs. The most important advice that I want to give to those students who want to study at IIMC is, always keep your ideas simple, crisp and maintain a positive attitude.

In the media world, especially newspapers, simplicity is what matters most. The more simple you write the more people would like to read your story.

After all, which reporter doesn't want his stories to be read by one and all and evoke response from the readers. So, relax, read the newspapers daily and crack the IIMC code.

Best of luck

Expert Tips from Prof. M.R.Dua

Condense all the facts & opinion in prescribed limit

Kunwar Abhishek Bhagat is English Journalism passout from the pioneer batch of new centre Amravati. A Management student by education, Abhishek has worked for North Zone Culutral Centre, Patiala as Event Director before joining IIMC. Abhishek is MBA- Hr with BBA from Himachal Pradesh University shimla. Now joined Nightshade Media Pvt Ltd, Noida as Trainee news desk.

From my point of view I think Journalism is a little more than just a profession. One has to love the news and the process of news making. Getting into journalism is not an easy job but once one had made his mind that he will pursue his career in journalism he will excel. The main key which will allow one to go across the IIMC gate is Written test. one should have to be well prepared for the same to get in this reputed institute.

One can prepare while working part time or even full time. All you have to do is to keep in touch with the recent news current affairs and happenings around you. Since the question paper deals with important events all around the world that have taken place during the last 12 or so month, its advisable that you go through news making events of the past one year. for the best preparation one can use Current affairs which are available at any book shop and this would help..

The writing part, however, demands extreme discipline. The questions usually have word limit that ranges from 150 to 200 words. It's very important to condense all the facts and opinion in that limit. A candidate must start writing at least a couple of pieces everyday on important topics adhering to the word limit. Sometimes more information leads to confusion in writing as one doesn't know what to write and what to leave out. So, just before you start writing, make sure that you have all the important points in your head.

You can't include everything you know so cut out the non relevant points which are not that relevant.specially for them who are preparing for the entrance in IIMC, only one suggestion read a much as you can...but read healthy, make notes and one thing please be sure this time a question on JUSTICE KATJU will be there in the entrance, so be ready and suggested reading websites like thehoot.org ...will help journalism students.... all the best and start preparing now.

IIMC's Nine months are lifetime in itself, all the best do well be relaxed and confident about your own abilities and preparations.

See As Much As You Can

Shivani Tiwari, Entrance topper AD-PR 2010-2011 is a Graduate in Economics. With an innate flair for observation and writing she got into the advertising industry where she could experiment with her sense of “logical creativity”.
Hinging hugely on Articulation, Awareness, PRoficiency and Brevity, the IIMC AD-PR entrance exam is not the toughest nut to crack. What is definitely required is to be constantly in touch with the latest and the newest of the brands and conversations surrounding them. These brands might be companies or celebrities too. A daily snacking of advertisements doing the rounds on different channels and of the various issues hovering over news channels needs to be done.

For a course that encapsulates creativity and opinion building in its syllabi, it’s really crucial for the aspirants to show their affinity for the same through their attempt. Practice writing on abstract thoughts which would help you get the hang of the shorter questions where instant creativity is called for. Try thinking ahead of the stereotypical ideas and out of the compartmentalized avenues. Innovative expressions should be the core of your answers keeping logical sense of the same at the back of the mind.

Read as much as you can from business to celebrities to politics to issues spanning different fields. In addition to widely reading, it is crucial to critically analyze the issues you read, build opinions around it and at the same time dissect them well. As far as brands are concerned, understand the ongoing campaigns and the merits and demerits of the same.

Having said that, relax watch TV, listen to radio and peek-a-boo while shopping …….See as much as you can.

All the Best
Shivani

3 Easy Steps to IIMC

Sumit Jha is a 2010-11 English Journalism passout. A mechanical engineer by education, Sumit worked for Infosys before chosing journalism as a career. He has been recruited by Reuters in an on campus recruitment.
The first step, to me, is the most important one. Personally, I think journalism is a little more than just a profession. One has to love news and the process of news making. Getting into journalism just because one thinks it’s glamorous or because everyone around you is appearing for various entrance tests is the most fatal mistake anyone can make. Once you have convinced yourself that journalism is the profession that you can excel in, begins the next step.

The second step deals with the actual preparation for the entrance exams. As far as IIMC is concerned, it’s not as rigorous as other prestigious exams like UPSC or Medical or Engineering. One can prepare while working part time or even full time. All you have to do is to keep in touch with the recent news. Since the question paper deals with important events all around the world that have taken place during the last 12 or so month, its advisable that you go through news making events of the past one year. For those who have started their preparations late, a yearly digest that contains important events could serve well.

It’s also important that you know the basics of any issue. In-depth knowledge helps and internet could be a big help in that regard. It’s also imperative that you are well versed with both the sides of any issue. Reading opinion, features and editorials would give you a vantage point and would also help you crystallize your own thinking. So, make newspapers and news portals your best friends till the exams.

The third step deals with putting on paper what you know. Start making list of issues that have made news recently and that’s not very difficult. In fact you would realize that questions would be asked on more or less those same topics which you had considered important. For example, Anna Hazare’s fast, 2G spectrum scam, Bihar assembly election, the upsurge in Middle East, Osama Bin Laden and his killing and the just concluded assembly elections are almost sure to feature on the question paper in one way or the other.

The writing part, however, demands extreme discipline. The questions usually have word limit that ranges from 150 to 200 words. It’s very important to condense all the facts and opinion in that limit. A candidate must start writing at least a couple of pieces everyday on important topics adhering to the word limit. Sometimes more information leads to confusion in writing as one doesn’t know what to write and what to leave out. So, just before you start writing, make sure that you have all the important points in your head.

You can’t include everything you know so cut out the flab by removing points that are not that relevant. Writing practice should inculcate this sense of what is more important and what could be left out. While writing, never go overboard and make sure your points are backed by strong logic and fact so that they do not just hang in the vacuum.

Nine months at IIMC is a lifetime in itself. Hope you get to be a part of IIMC. Be relaxed and confident about your own abilities and preparations.

Knowledge is more important than preparation

I am Ankur Ogra. I passed out of the institute in 2006. I was awarded the Achin Ganguly Memorial Scholarship for topping the entrance examination. I have worked in various advertising agencies like Dentsu, Ogilvy & Mather, Draft FCB Ulka and I am currently working with Percept Hakuhodo as Senior Manager –Strategy. I have worked on various brands like American Express, Hutch/Vodafone, Tata Docomo, Oswal among others. I was also doing theatre during my days at the institute with Barry John and acted in some plays with him.
Preparing for the advertising & PR entrance exam is the easiest the challenge I have faced in my life. Unbelievable...yes but true!

Because there was absolutely no preparation I had done for it. This is an exam that tests your knowledge of current socio-political matters affecting society and the relevance and importance of branding, advertising, marketing and other business issues affecting our everyday life.

Hence, preparation at the last minute would not be of great help, so anyone who has been reading economic and political newspapers and magazines will have a far greater edge than someone who has picked it up in the last few weeks.

Tips to crack the entrance examination for Advertising & PR

My suggestions– brand equity on ET (Wednesdays), Storyboard (CNBC), All about ads (NDTV Profit). Just follow these articles and programmes religiously till the time of the exam and I am sure it would be of great help.

The questions are subjective and you have 2 hours to finish. So you need to be fast in answering. Very fast! Since the competition is tough please don’t leave any question.

There is a group discussion after you have been shortlisted on the basis of your written examination for 15 marks. But this exam is not independent of your written exam, so even if you screw up your GD, you still have a good chance of cracking the exam!...so in a nutshell the entrance exam is of paramount importance. The total score is calculated from 100 marks.

Finally, just be calm and composed and am sure you will crack it.

Best of luck

Read newspapers and keep yourself updated

To be honest and when I write this do not take me to be a pretentious snob, but getting through the English Journalism entrance is not a rocket science. I may sound a little ambitious but if I am asked how to crack IIMC entrance examinations, I have a simple answer- all you need to do is keep yourself updated with all you can. Sounds a little hard? It may at first but when you actually start thinking about it you might realise that reading a newspaper thoroughly for two to three hours daily is enough. It should be in your habit to read a newspaper on a daily basis. Your day should be incomplete unless you have read a newspaper.

Search for everything that has been in news in the last one year globally. You should be having a thorough understanding of what are all the burning issues. The issues can range from politics, economics to sports, movies et al. (whether national or international).

If possible try writing some essays on the issues that were in news recently and by news I mean major events. Every major English daily has a presence on web where you can find all the news to satiate your thirst. Read whatever you can about current issues you come across. Make it a habit of reading the newspaper editorial section.

Now how to answer questions. Generally, you get one statement on a current topic and are asked to give your viewpoints or do a critical analysis of the given problem. Of course there is a word limit for that ranging between 150-200 words. The examiners are not only checking your understanding of the issue and writing skills they are also looking at your own viewpoint on different issues. It is important to have a stand on issues. For example Jan Lok Pal Bill. You might be asked your viewpoint on it or to critically analyse whether India needs a law like this or not. You may also be also be asked about whether Anna Hazare's method of protest was right or wrong. This is just an example of the types that can be asked.

You should be ready to answer such questions with adequate reasons and facts backing your argument. Try giving both sides of an issue and then justifying one over other. Keep your sentences simple and short. Try not to beat around the bush. Avoid repetation.

Important thing to remeber is try not to cross word limit. You can end your essays short but try not to cross the limit. How effectively you can express yourself within prescribed limit is also a test. Give only relevant arguments i.e. only those which are related to the question asked.

Another question asked where there is a potential of scoring is where you are asked to write two-three sentences on various topics ranging from personalities to issues and organisations in news. If you are following the current events this one should not be a problem.

I must admit that I felt myself to be lucky to get through this test considering the fact that being the premier institute for Journalism it is an achievement in itself to get through its entrance examination. Again i would say read, read and read whatever you can on current topics and issues in news in the last few months. The more you read the better your understanding on issues will be and easier it will be to answer the questions. Become a “news junkie”!

To be succesfull in this field you should have a passion for writing and news. Best of luck for the exams.
