Preparing for Radio & Television Journalism...

For all the aspirants who want to be a Radio and Television Journalist:

Preparation: Well, the first thing, which I heard on my first day of IIMc's Radio and TV journalism class, was: Since you have made it here, you guys are already half journalists. Well I know all of you reading it might feel pumped-up after all it's a great compliment to start your journalism career with.

But, now as a journalist please read the finer point, that also means you possess what a journalist should possess, a lot of knowledge about every important happenings in the world. So you must be a regular newspaper reader, and hear I don't mean a film-section reader. You must know what has happened in the world in the last one year. So some of the sections you should take of in your general awareness is:

1) General and Political News of India. Remember the Nuclear deal and left stuff, Mayawati, etc.
2) Sports: Sports news India and international: major focus is on Cricket, Hockey, Tennis, and Badminton. Olympics coming up in China are huge.
3) Business Developments: Here business personalities are important. Know; also share market things, Governmental financial institutions.
4) International Politics and Conflicts: Middle east Pakistan American European Union Russia; know what major things happened in these reasons. This is another area where a lot of questions are asked. So, you should be aware of the latest in the world in the last one year, like Pakistan happenings, India's relation with major countries of the world.
5) Historical Events or Facts: Be prepared as some questions could be of general natural, what we called static general awareness, not the dynamic GK of the last one years. Those who have been good with their social studies papers can smile.

Once, you are confident of your knowledge, make sure you have a sharp brain to be able to co-relate events and always present a larger picture of a story, which you might be asked to explain as it shows your rounded awareness of the subject.

During Exam: You are confident of your preparations, but it can be marred if you don't take care of the time limits. A lot of writing is involved and remember its on topics you hardly write regularly even if you know. The questions are very much similar for all the three journalism courses, only in RTV questions they check for the succinctness of your language, directness of your reply, so no beating around the bush, though it happens a lot on TV, also try to picture your story use figurative words, easy words and lot of information in your answers. Write in the word limit not because your marks will be deducted if you write more but you might get exhausted thinking of too many points in one answer and wouldn't the same standard for other answers. Also you might leave some questions unanswered, so very strictly take care of the time limits. Questions are there to check your general knowledge of the subject not the expert knowledge write as much as you know, not think of smart points.

Interview: So, following my expert advice you have cracked-past the written, well many congratulations for that, but its work half-done to sail through to the hallowed gates of IIMC. You need to get past interview as well.

For Radio and TV there is no group discussion generally, but be prepared in case there is one as a TV journalist should always be ready for the unknown. In place of GD there is a one minute speaking in front of camera, you will face it there before you do it in a channel yes. So, there you need to show your restraint, flow of language, calmness of your posture, no visible tension, have a still posture during the camera interaction, also don't think in between speaking, think then start your speech. Try not to stop in middle that can happen and here your control over self comes in play, remember a panel of five people are watching your speech in a connected room. And once you through with your first camera session, you face the interview panel (see the visual image I am presenting follow it in your writing as you will sail) there try being calm confident, they will ask you questions on your camera presentation, then the genera questions on your area of interest, never mention you read lot of books they will grill you to pieces, so remember the are you choose for interest. Also, your general awareness will always come in handy for the interview.

Then What: Wait for the results you have done your best. If you were good in your precise pictorial and flowing writings with easy words as is required in television, you had a good on camera presentations, you did your interviews well, you will sail through, the IIMC RTV paper, the class room is on the first floor and it opens up to the front gardens of the institute, where you will shoot your first television stories fighting for the camera and mikes and of course the attentions of your lovely female or male class mates as per the gender requirements.

For those of you who couldn't make well hard luck, but if you have a journalist inside, never give-up like journalist follow-up on your dream, and you might reach your source that is IIMC next year.
