The gift is worthy to those who once had dreamt of possessing it

Like the two faces of a coin, we humans also are a mixture of good and bad qualities. I am no exception to the rule that no one is born perfect. A graduate in English and Psychology, I want to utilize the gift of expressing myself through words in carving a niche for myself.

Firstly, I would like to congratulate all the blessed souls who have successfully made their first move towards fulfilling their dream of being a part of the institute. I consider them blessed because, i) they are gifted with skill of luring people with their thoughts and words that helped them get through, and ii) they are going to be associated with IIMC, the dream, the truth.

The results having been declared, each of us got what we deserved- tears of joy, tears of sorrow, disappointment, failures and experience! Nobody got home empty handed. I, personally, got a mixed taste, of disappointment, hopelessness and God knows what. Like all of you, I too knew what I had done in the paper, the moment I came out of the room. It wasn’t like I was trying to hope against hope. A few follies here and there, still, that restlessness, that dream of leaping in the air overjoyed after seeing my results, seemed to linger on my mind for a long time. I kept a track of the result declaration day through the website. So, finally when I saw the due date, that lingering feeling came back to me with full force, giving me restless nights.

There were times when I would have a dream of sitting infront of the panel in the interview room, and then there were times where I would see my very own answer sheet getting torn to pieces. “Dreams are our hidden desires in disguise”, they say. So what was I supposed to interpret from the above dreams?? That I was torn into halves between getting through and running away from IIMC??...Well, these things are too tough for me to understand, so I left it all for 12th of June to decide.

Finally came the day. The anxiety, fear and uneasiness crossed all their levels with each tick of the clock hand. Morning changed to noon, and then to evening. I would open the website page, one half of me praying for the results to get displayed, the other half of me wishing the contrary, fearing the outcome. But as destiny and IIMC would have it, the results were finally displayed. I looked at the screen for 10 minutes, with the mouse right under my hand, waiting eagerly for that one click. I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to know what awaited me. But then, I couldn’t run from it. So, I decided to proceed. “Click”, and there it was, the result page, staring right into my eyes. I tried to concentrate on the number 020035, the endless list of names in the first column, then I jumped to the second. The numbers 28 and 36 came and went by. “Shit! I am not there”. In desperation, I looked again , AA010036…ah…”It’s AA”, I thought. “May be the-second-time-lucky” charm is going to work for me, so I searched again. AB…ah there it is, AB020… and AB02005….I so wanted “AB020035” with NEHA SHEFALI written next to it, to appear on the screen. But I knew it wouldn’t. That feeling when all you want in this world is to see your name somewhere hidden in the list, amongst the other names, when you want to go wrong for once, hoping to see your name in the list when you check it the second time.

The story is somewhat mean.

Well, it came and went by. Another dream remains a dream. I hope that something better is waiting for me in some corner of the world. I hope the same for those who have had a similar experience. I wish you all great luck ahead. Just wanted to share what I felt with all who cherished and nurtured the dream called IIMC.

All that glitters is not gold

A passionate aspirant for the AD-PR course this year, I yearn to glide through the toughest times and reach the zenith of excellence.

IIMC has been my biggest dream ever since I was in 10^th grade and finally when I appeared for my attempt this year, I was awestruck. It wasn't something I was looking forward to as the pattern suddenly took a new turn by introducing general mathematics and analytical questions.

Glancing through the first question I literally shivered because mathematics isn't something I have been in cordial terms with after school but I soon recollected my calm and without even going through any other question I started off. Without much hurdle I completed the part and carried on further.

Next few questions demanded notes on Global Warming, Malnutrition, Sex ratio in Urban areas, Trademark, SEBI, RTI, WTO, Digital Media, Bio-diversity, judicial activism, IPL, PM on Facebook, US elections and so on. Such general issues seemed super easy and this wasn't what an ideal IIMC paper would demand.

I instantly realized that giving general answers wouldn't fetch me much and so I decided to think different and write different even if it would cost me heavy. By God's grace my mind and fingers work at a fast pace so till the time I reached the last segment, good 40 minutes were left.

Honestly, the last part was my favorite because it required analytics, application, creativity and precision. We were asked to give alternate tag lines with reasons for Kingfisher, Amazon, Big Bazaar, Philips, Nike, The Indian Express & Apple. I tried to supplement my proposed tag-lines with logical reasons and theories.

The question paper no doubt wasn't a child's play and required a lot of mental work. Though it appeared pretty easy but I would still repeat 'all that glitters is not gold'. I tried to give a fair presentation and look forward to a fortunate result.

IIMC 2012 Entrance: Experience by an Aspirant

I will go one by one. First, English Journalism. To be quite frank, I know the competition this time around is going to be really tough because the more the question paper is easy, the more competition you face. The question paper was very much expected as the major issues was the basic motto behind setting up the question paper. There were questions which were doing all the talking in the news recently be it NCTC, Agni V, Maoists, Presidential Election, Poverty Line, Unstable Indian economy, UP elections, Syrian crisis to name a few! Moreover something on the Grammar part was quite obviously expected being it the English Journalism exam. If one stuck to the word limits, the question paper was not at all lengthy! The question which asked to differentiate between the two words was a bit tricky one for me!

Coming to Radio and TV Journalism, I would like to thank the IIMC blog for this as there were almost 80 percent of the questions that the expert anticipated that would come in the question paper. Again, the question paper highlighted the need for awareness on major issues. Again, the Internet restriction was one question which was expected that it being one of the most talked about issue in the Government offices! Satyamev Jayate couldn't be ignored and so there was a question on the same too! So I think it wasn't only the awareness that mattered but how well you utilize those word limits to convey your thoughts to the examiner! Radio and TV Journalism was again not at all lengthy assuming that one adheres to the word limit!

Now, let me come to the most unexpected of the lots. The Ad-PR question paper! When I got it, I thought there is a fault and a wrong question paper has been circulated because mathematics in the question paper was itself a shocker! Though it was just a single 15 marker but then it had 5 sub parts. The only thing that relieved me was that the math part was very basic and objective too hence quite scoring if you see the good side of it with questions coming on Mean, Median, ROI, Profit and Loss etc. No wonder it is written in the instructions clearly that the question paper tests the "analytic skills" as well! The paper was a bit lengthy and required a bit mental exercise as well. There were questions on general awareness keeping in mind the current issues as well.

Topics such as Global Warming, Malnutrition, Sex ratio in Urban areas, Trademark, SEBI, RTI, WTO, Digital Media, Bio-diversity, judicial activism, IPL sought to test the general awareness and the clear vision of the writer on the topics. Other such as Presidential elections in US and PM coming on FB was meant to test the current issue awareness! The question which required mental exercise as mentioned above was the one in which one was asked to make an advertisement on IIMC and there was a question which asked for alternate taglines of various brands such as Kingfisher, Amazon, Big Bazaar, Philips, Nike, The Indian Express to name a few with their current taglines already mentioned. Hence it was a balanced act to be honest with the examiner clearly testing the analytic ability, awareness, communication and creative skills of the candidate!

The question paper was on a bit satisfactory side. Fingers are now crossed and the results are eagerly awaited. I hope God is on my side this time. All the best.
