Keep Calm and Catch Your Dreams

Aishwarya Anand arrived at IIMC for the course of Ad-PR (2013-14) after completing BCA. She got placed with ValueFirst- Digital possibilities as  a Social Media Management Trainee.

9 days to the entrance exam and with the panic setting in, you are bound to lose your cool and will eventually miss out on some important information. Keep calm, relax. Clearing AD/PR is not a difficult task. If you are passionate about reading and writing and can think on your feet, you have amazing imagination and can persuade people to believe your ideas, then you are almost through to the GD.

A lot of people have told me- “AD/PR is going to be filled with questions on Advertising, we don’t know anything about advertising”, trust me you don’t have to know about advertising to clear the paper. I am a BCA graduate who knew nothing about advertising or PR about a year back. I still managed to clear the paper. AD/PR entrance exam can contain questions related to absolutely anything and everything. If you think you are creative, the paper will be a cake walk for you.

Remember one thing- lengthy answers are not going to fetch you more marks. Keep it as simple and short as possible. Do not beat around the bush. Read as much as possible. Keep yourself updated with the latest news and happenings around the world. DO NOT CHANGE THE CHANNEL DURING THE BREAK…. Watch all the television commercial.

It will seem like it was just yesterday that you wrote the entrance exam and you’ll find the results knocking at your door. Once you clear the entrance exam you have to gear up for the GD/PI. Okay one does not prepare for a GD. I can assure you that even if you Google topics for GD and take tutorials on YouTube you will be taken by surprise when you are actually there at the GD. One cannot in their wildest dreams imagine the kind of topics that one might get in the GD at IIMC.

What you must do is dress up in formals and look neat and presentable. There is no rule that you speak in fluent English, if you think your Hindi is your strength then go ahead and speak in Hindi. You don’t have to be the first one to speak, but make sure whatever you say makes senses and is relevant to the topic given to you. You will be asked to pick a chit to select the topic, think twice before you pick one. Let’s hope you get an easy topic.

Nobody can guide you for the PI. You are the passport to your seat in IIMC. Project your talent and caliber. Be confident, calm and relaxed. Listen carefully and answer smartly. Do not say anything that you cannot substantiate for.

Trust me it’s an actual “dreams come true moment “, when you find your name in the selected candidates list. So chase your dreams, prepare well.

Written Exam Mainly Tests Your Writing Skills

Well, IIMC’s written test is basically a test of your writing skills and how well aware you are about current affairs. To crack the test, reading newspapers is a must. I won’t suggest you guys to read ten newspapers a day. That’s crazy. Read according to your capacity.

Keep a tab on the current issues of last six months. Make a list and read articles, listen to commentaries or watch TV debates related to those topics.

Since, this was an election season which saw the formation of a new government read about issues related to it. Read articles, magazines, newspaper editorials as much as you can. Watch news and TV debates. It might sound ridiculous considering the nature of debates Television nowadays broadcast. But TV discussions will give you good insights into various issues.

While writing answers, try to keep it within the stipulated word limit. It is actually difficult to write in a crisp, short and concise manner. It is an art to write crisp answers. So take it as a challenge. Also, never use long, big and ornamented words. Use simple and lucid language. I advise each one of you to practice writing everyday. This is an exercise I followed diligently while appearing for the written test and trust me it helped me immensely. Not only did it hone my writing skills, but it also gave me immense confidence. I knew that I would clear the test. And I want all of you to feel that confidence. Writing daily will take you ahead of others in this race.

The written exam allots 20 marks to short notes where you would be asked about important personalities who were in news. This section is the easiest. It will fetch you maximum marks. Just try to be to the point, do not beat around the bush. For this, keep a tab on the newsmakers of the last six months. Read about important people who died, who created controversy during elections and so on.

There is also a grammar section where you will be given words to explain their synonyms. This is something for which you need not rely on books or newspapers. Apply your logic and common sense. No additional reading can help you in this. It is basically a test of your grammatical skills.

Finally, a piece of advice for all of you: Do not panic. Tell yourself everyday ‘I will make it’. People think IIMC is a hard nut to crack but trust me it isn’t. Those who crack IIMC are not prodigies. They are as normal as you and me. What you need is hard work, dedication and sincerity. And one last thing, READ newspapers. Make it your habit. And do not leave reading newspapers once you crack IIMC. If you seriously want to pursue journalism, reading newspapers should be at the top of your ‘to-do’ list.

'कॉमन सेंस' है न, फिर परीक्षा का नो टेंशन :)

नाम है मोहित पसरिचा. 2013-14 बैच में एड-पीआर का कोर्स करने से पहले पत्रकारिता से वास्ता था. एक छोटे हिंदी दैनिक में जूनियर सब एडिटर रहते हुए हिंदी कॉपी राइटिंग के लिए दिल मचला और किस्मत आईआईएमसी ले आई. यहां कश्रा प्रतिनिधि की भूमिका भी निभाई. फिलहाल मैक्कैन वर्ल्डवाइड में कॉपीराइटिंग इंटर्न. फेसबुक, उर्दू-हिंदी शायरी, 'वन लाइनर्स' के अलावा जिंदगी में कुछ बेहतरीन दोस्त हैं जो आईआईएससी ने ही बख्शे हैं.

मैं इस वक्त और तजुर्बे से गुजर चुका हूं इसलिए जो समझ कमाई है उसे साझा कर रहा हूं. मैं ज्यादा भूमिका नहीं बांधते हुए सीधे मुद्दे की बात पर आता हूं. 31 मई के एंट्रेंस टेस्ट से पहले इन बातों पर जोर दीजिएगा. उम्मीद है कि आपके काम आएंगी. दो प्रश्नों में चुनाव करने को मिलता है इसलिए अपनी पसंद, समझदारी, रूचि और दक्षता को ध्यान में रख कर ही जवाब दीजिएगा. 

हाल के दिनों के कुछ मुख्य 'एडवर्टाइजिंग कैम्पेन्स' पर नजर डाल लीजिएगा. मसलन बीजेपी का चुनाव प्रचार किसने हैंडल किया, किस तरह से किया, किस तरह के नारे गढ़े, कौन लोग थे जो ये नारे गढ़ रहे थे, वीडियो बना रहे थे, पोस्टर तैयार कर रहे थे और किस तरह इस प्रचार ने नरेंद्र मोदी को सरकार तक पहुंचने में मदद की. 

इसी तरह कांग्रेस के प्रचार अभियान पर भी आपकी जानकारी दुरुस्त रहे कि कौन सी कंपनी कांग्रेस के लिए क्या-क्या हैंडल कर रही थी. ये भी आपको पता रहे कि हाल के दिनों में किन विज्ञापनों पर बवाल हुआ, किन विज्ञापनों ने लोगों का दिल जीता. इस तरह के सवालों के जरिए कैंपेन को लेकर आप की जागरूकता और आपकी समझ को परखा जाएगा.

• 'पीआर' क्या होता है और 'एडवर्टाइजिंग' से ये किन मायनों में अलग है. यह समझ आपमें होनी चाहिए.
• 'सोशल मीडिया' के बड़े प्लेटफॉर्म, उनसे जुड़ी अहम जानकारी और उसके महत्व का अंदाजा रखें.
• मुख्य राष्ट्रीय व अंतर्राष्ट्रीय घटनाओं के पीछे के कारणों की जानकारी जरूर होनी चाहिए.
• पिछले एक महीने में अखबार और समाचार चैनलों की सुर्खियों से परिचित रहें. जवाब में विविधता और संतुलन लाने के लिए कुछ प्रमुख अखबारों के संपादकीय जरूर पढ़ें.
• Mean, Median, Mode, Average  से जुड़े प्रश्न भी आ सकते हैं. 'कैलकुलेशन्स' और 'मैथ' को नापसंद करने वालों को डरने की जरूरत नहीं. बस आम जानकारी और फॉर्मूलों को याद रख लें.
• समय का ध्यान रखिएगा. जितना पूछा जाए, उतना जवाब ही दीजिएगा. किसी विषय से जुडी स्वभाविक बातों का जिक्र जरूर करें.
• आप में 'कॉमन सेंस' है तो यह टेस्ट क्या जिंदगी का कोई भी एग्जाम हो आप अव्वल ही आएंगे.

Simplicity & Clarity of Thought is the Key to Written

Currently working as Correspondent cum Sub- Editor in World Consulting and Research Corporation magazine via Campus Placement.

A year ago, while reading the various blogs full of tips and advices of “do’s and don’ts” at the IIMC Counseling Website, I had never imagined that I would be writing something like this for the aspirants of IIMC so soon!

Last year in the month of April, when I was graduating from Hans Raj College and the question of “what- next” was on everybody’s lips, I was firm about studying in a Journalism school, learning the nitty-gritty of reporting and editing and becoming a journalist. After all, it had been a childhood dream and this was ShowTime. So anything and everything required to crack the entrances was to be done in very less time.
On the one hand, there was nostalgia and emotions; the innumerable farewells in University of Delhi, final exams and on the other, the entrance examinations piled up along with the pressure of getting admission in a good mass communication college.

Getting into the reputed ‘Indian Institute of Mass Communication’ was no less than a dream and I’m sure all those who are reading this right now have the same kind of passion for reading and writing as I possessed. Cutting the long story short, I would suggest that those appearing for the exam on 31st May must keep in mind that simplicity in language and clarity of thoughts are the two key points for getting through the first round. One must remember that short sentences and use of crisp language creates a longer effect on the examiner’s mind in the written exam.

As you must have glanced through the various previous year question papers on the website by now, IIMC written exam is no rocket science. It is a combination of current affairs, general knowledge and general English language testing questions. You will be required to answer some essay-type questions on current affairs such as the role of the Aam Aadmi party in 2014 Elections, the challenges which lay ahead for Modi- Sarkaar, importance of campaigning via social media in elections, IPL tournament, world-affairs like the Russia- Crimea conflict, etc. For answering all such questions it is utmost required that you read up a newspaper everyday (one would be more than enough I believe) and tune to some news channels regularly.

Apart from the essay type questions, there will be a few questions testing your English grammar skills and some on the famous personalities who have been in news recently (or in the past one year). There is no requirement of any kind of coaching classes, if you go by my example. One should be able to express his or her thoughts in a presentable manner and keep it as simple as possible.

Writing more would not help getting any bonus marks, so kindly avoid it. There is a specific word limit given in the question paper for each answer and strictly following the instructions would prove to be a great help. Also, try writing on the current issues and don’t just state facts, instead try to give out opinions about what you feel without taking sides. Clearing the written examination is the most important as it carries high weight age in the selection procedure and is the basis of deciding your future.

Lastly, I would insist that you read the question paper at least twice before you answer it excitedly. Try and keep your answers short and to-the-point.

Good luck to all the aspirants. Keep reading and write as clearly and simply as possible. Remember, this is your stepping stone towards a ten- month journey …full of learning and fun!

पत्रकार बनना है तो खबरों में रुचि जरूरी है

चंद्र प्रकाश 1998-99 बैच के छात्र हैं. अभी टीवी टुडे ग्रुप के समाचार चैनल तेज़ से जुड़े हैं. इससे पहले एनडीटीवी इंडिया, सीएनबीसी आवाज़, स्टार न्यूज़, ज़ी न्यूज़ और नवभारत टाइम्स में काम कर चुके हैं. चंद्र प्रकाश ने बीएचयू से मनोविज्ञान ऑनर्स किया है. IIMC में आने से पहले उन्हें लगता था कि वो किसी काम के नहीं हैं, लेकिन यहां आने के बाद उन्हें पता चला कि वो कितने गलत थे. IIMC  आने वाले ये 'ब्रह्मज्ञान' हासिल करके ही जाते हैं.

अगर आपने बीते 2-3 महीने रोज न्यूज पेपर पढ़ा है और दिन में एक या दो टीवी न्यूज़ बुलेटिन या प्रोग्राम देखा है तो मानकर चलिए कि आपकी तैयारी पूरी है. बस इस समय सारी अहम जानकारियों को एक बार रिवाइज़ करने की जरूरत है. इसके लिए अगले एक हफ्ते का टाइम बहुत है. आप लोग खुशकिस्मत हैं कि अभी तुरंत चुनाव खत्म हुए हैं. ज्यादातर चुनावी मुद्दों और चुनाव से जुड़े लोगों के इर्द-गिर्द सवाल आ सकते हैं. क्योंकि इस साल जनवरी के बाद से ही चुनाव और इससे जुड़ी घटनाएं और लोग ही ज्यादातर सुर्खियों में रहे हैं. इसका मतलब ये नहीं कि चुनाव के अलावा बाकी कुछ नहीं आएगा. हर बड़ी देसी-विदेशी घटना की जानकारी होनी चाहिए. 

याददाश्त पर भरोसा करें

मैं उम्मीद करता हूं कि बीते 2-3 महीने में जो कुछ आपने पढ़ा, सुना या देखा है, उसे समझा भी है और उसकी थोड़ी-बहुत डिटेल भी आपको पता होगी. मसलन, वीएस संपत और एचएस ब्रह्मा को तो सभी लोग जानते होंगे, लेकिन नसीम जैदी कौन हैं, ये भी आपको पता है. ऐसे बहुत से कैरेक्टर होते हैं, जिनकी बहुत ज्यादा चर्चा नहीं होती. अगर आपने खबरों को ध्यान से देखा है तो भूलने की चिंता मत कीजिए, नाम सामने आने पर सब याद आ जाएगा. अगर आप अब से कोशिश करें कि देश के सभी महत्वपूर्ण मुद्दों और व्यक्तियों की जानकारी इकट्ठा कर लें तो ये संभव नहीं है. आराम से पढ़ाई करें और अपनी याददाश्त और कॉमन सेंस पर भरोसा करें.

विचारधारा या सियासी पसंद छिपाएं

किसी भी जवाब को लिखने में इस बात का पूरा ध्यान रखें कि कहीं से आपकी विचारधारा नहीं झलकनी चाहिए. इससे फायदा हो-न-हो नुकसान की गुंजाइश ज्यादा रहती है. जैसे कि पिछले साल के पेपर में भ्रष्टाचार पर सवाल पूछा गया है, लेकिन ऐसा न हो कि आप भ्रष्टाचार की बात करते-करते किसी पार्टी की बुराई और किसी की तारीफ करने लगें. बात को ऑब्जेक्टिव तरीके से भी लिखा जा सकता है. जैसे कि किसी मुद्दे पर अगर टिप्पणी लिखने को कहा गया है तो आप उससे जुड़े दोनों पहलू का जिक्र करें. उदाहरण के लिए सीबीआई की ऑटोनॉमी पर सवाल में ऐसा न हो कि लिखने लग जाएं कि सरकार ने सीबीआई को तोता बना दिया है. इसके बजाय ये लिखें कि सुप्रीम कोर्ट को कहना पड़ा कि सीबीआई सरकार का तोता बन गई है. ऐसे में ये सरकार की जिम्मेदारी है कि वो सीबीआई के लिए लोगों में भरोसा जगाए. लेकिन ये काम इतना आसान भी नहीं है. वगैरह-वगैरह.

जवाब आसान भाषा में लिखें

सवालों के जवाब लिखने में बहुत कठिन शब्दों का इस्तेमाल करने से बचें. बोलचाल की भाषा हर किसी को पसंद आती है. वाक्य छोटे रखें, इससे पढ़ने वाले को समझने में आसानी होती है. तथा, द्वारा, एवं, इत्यादि जैसे शब्दों का कतई इस्तेमाल न करें. याद रखें ये टेस्ट इस बात का नहीं है कि आपको हिंदी के कितने कठिन शब्दों की जानकारी है. बल्कि इस बात का टेस्ट है कि क्या आपका लिखा कॉपी जांचने वाला समझ पाता है. अगर वो समझेगा तो पास करेगा, वरना फेल कर देगा. बहुत ज्यादा ज्ञान दिखाने से भी नुकसान हो सकता है. सवालों के जवाब to the point रखें, बिना वजह बात को भटकाएं नहीं. स्पेलिंग की गलतियां कतई नहीं होनी चाहिए.

सवाल को सही से समझें

जिन लोगों को अंग्रेजी समझने में बहुत दिक्कत नहीं है, उनके लिए एक सलाह ये है कि हिंदी में सवाल पढ़ने के बाद उसे इंग्लिश में भी एक बार पढ़ लें. ज्यादा से ज्यादा 10 सेकेंड अधिक लगेगा, लेकिन प्रश्न सही-सही समझने में इससे आसानी होगी. क्योंकि पेपर में बेहद सरकारी हिंदी में सवाल पूछे जाते हैं.

बरगलाने की कोशिश न करें

सवाल का जवाब आता है तो अच्छी बात है. थोड़ा-बहुत जवाब आता है तो थोड़ा-बहुत ही लिखें. लेकिन ऐसा कतई न करें कि जवाब ही नहीं आता और आपने कुछ भी अंट-शंट लिख डाला.

खुद को बेवकूफ न समझें

ये सबसे ज्यादा जरूरी बात है, क्योंकि हम में से कई लोग गांव-देहात या छोटे शहरों से आते हैं. लखनऊ, दिल्ली जैसे सेंटरों पर रिटेन टेस्ट से पहले जो माहौल होता है उससे आधा कॉन्फिडेंस हिल जाता है. माहौल से प्रभावित न हों, सिर झुकाकर इम्तिहान देने जाएं और चुपचाप बाहर आ जाएं. एग्जाम सेंटर पर जिन लोगों की वजह से बड़ी चमक-दमक होती है, उनमें से कोई आपको IIMC में नहीं मिलेगा.
