Key to Success: Knowledge is Power

Dhiren Dukhu is a 2005-06 EJ graduate from the Dhenkanal campus. Before IIMC, he worked as a city reporter for The Hitavada, Raipur (CG) for two years. After IIMC, he shifted to New Delhi and worked as a business journalist. He conceptualised and co-anchored India's first technology supplement (print) FC Edge for The Financial Chronicle and later on set up the news desk for Tehelka's business daily The Financial World. At present, he lives in Mumbai and works as an Assistant News Editor (features) with The Economic Times. He's a sleepy VP of IIMC Alumni Association. :)

“You're miserable, edgy and tired. You're in the perfect mood for journalism.”

― Warren Ellis

If you want to be an MBA/IAS/social worker then do just that. Don't eat up a seat that could have produced a career journalist / PR / Ad guru. Focus on your primary goal. Nothing else matters. You'll do yourself a huge favour. There's no point in reading this piece further nor studying at IIMC.

If you are still reading this it means a) you REALLY want to be a journalist / PR / Ad guy or b) you are curious about IIMC. Either way, hope my thoughts help yours.
At IIMC, no matter the stream, you'll learn "Medium is the message." And that's it. Rest is all commentary. You can Study Journalism from Wikiversity also. So, why study at IIMC when the entire course material is available on the net?
You probably want....
·  Discipline and competition to improve.
·  A brand "Indian Institute" in your resume.
·  Want to make friends.
·  Tap the largest organised network of media professionals.
·  Get a mentor, practical exposure and understanding of how the entire media industry works.
·  Become more knowledgeable and a better thinker
Then yes, IIMC is the door to get all those things. But it's not a magic portal.

You won't instantly get...
·  Salaries like MBAs. Because it's NOT an MBA institute.
·  Fame and recognition. You need to work for it.
What you can expect to get instantly is....
·  Some preference during recruitment.
·  Industry connections
·  Long working hours with low salary.
·  Alumni at work place to mentor you.
·  A chance make an impact with your newly-acquired skills in the real world.

Placements will largely depend on the economy, demand-supply mechanics and most importantly YOUR knowledge. Most likely you'll get what you deserve. Salaries will become better as you gain more experience, understanding of issues and maturity.

After graduating from IIMC, initial days will be EXTREMELY tough. Work load will be high, pressure will be immense and expectations will be insane. You must have seen the crowd of journos and camera crews at press conferences on TV. On top of that your initial salary could be lower than your friend who did an MBA instead and is now working for a bank or selling soaps in villages.

If you are lucky--whether in journalism, PR or advertisement--you'll get to work 10-14 hours a day. Anything less than that will be picnic and no one gets paid for picnics.

You will need a reservoir of passion and patience to make a mark in media or in any other field for that matter. Industries do no favour or discrimination to your college tag. It respects quality work. That's exactly you will get to learn at IIMC.

If you are still excited about working in the media and can convincingly express it (in writing or verbally) then you are already halfway into IIMC. Rest of the way can be covered with decent GK, writing skills and common sense. Know something about everything and everything about something.

PS: Don't expect to gain all knowledge by reading only newspapers.

Answer Should Be To The Point, Don’t exaggerate

Srinibas Rout is an alumnus of English Journalism Department, 2012-13 batch,  from Dhenkanal campus of IIMC. He is working as a Sub-Editor with Business Standard.

First of all, let me tell you, friends, that the IIMC entrance test is an easy examination. The written paper basically tests your news awareness and how you can present the news to the reader in a language that he understands without putting in too much effort.

As you would be aware, the paper will be a combination of subjective (with word limit) and objective questions. The questions cover many areas like national and international politics, economics, cinema, sports, etc.

So, here are some suggestions from me that you could benefit from while writing the paper:
A.) Use correct and precise English. Your writing should be to the point and without exaggeration.

B.) As politics is the flavour of the season, I would believe a large chunk of the questions would be from the country's current political scene. Issues like the the rise and fall of the Aam Aadmi Party and its impact on modern Indian politics, the issue of 'communal card' and 'secular card' and the polarisation in elections,  major Supreme Court decisions during the past 8-10 months, allegations of crony capitalism (like  issues of the Vadras, the Adanis, the Ambanis, etc), the Telangana story, the various scams during the UPA govt and the Devyani Khobragade episode might find space in your test.

C.) From the economy and business fields, issues like the KG-D6 gas pricing row, the recent volatility in the value of the Indian rupee vis-à-vis the US dollar, the NSEL scam, Subrata Roy's custody issue (basically the OFCD refund default matter), tardy growth during UPA-2 and India's food security scheme and the whole buzz surrounding it at the WTO meet could be some topical subjects in the written test.

D.) From the international section, questions regarding the Russia-West conflict over Crimea and Ukraine, the South China Sea conflict involving Japan, China and other countries of the region, the Malaysian plane tragedy could be important.

E.) It might help to brush up your general awareness by reading a good current affairs magazine (last 3 months). This would be useful for the objective questions. Remember the names of prominent persons (both national and International) and why they were in news, besides major award winners and sports personalities who made headlines.

F.) And, for the grammar section, refresh your basics and try to stick to correctness, structuring and preciseness of your sentences.

All the best, friends. Do well!

Relax and Let Your Pen Do the Talking!

Shatabdi Chakraborty, EJ, 2010-11: I graduated in English literature from Calcutta University and got the biggest leap of my life in the form of Indian Institute of Mass Communication. Started off my career with ANI Delhi and then moved back to Calcutta to work with an English Daily called The Bengal Post. Right now, I am posted with The Times of India, Goa, as a senior sports correspondent and copy editor.

Shatabdi is General Secretary of West Bengal Chapter of IIMC Alumni Association.

An all-India entrance exam seems to be always intimidating. But you don’t have to feel nervous if u are well prepared and believe in destiny. Of course, a year’s preparation is a must if you want to crack the IIMC exams. I was hardly an expert of political and financial affairs before I started reading each page of different newspapers. The Hindu, The Times of India and The Telegraph worked wonders. But I would suggest the examinees to go online and read as many papers as possible.

I was a student of print journalism in the 2010 batch. The most important issues of the past one year should find place in your knowledge tank. But reading and only reading is of no help if you don’t know how to produce it on paper, thus recollection and choosing your word play a very crucial role. The biggest aspect of being a good journalist is to be very precise in your expression. You must know how to make you write-up crisp yet effective. Do write at home and see if you can keep it within 350 words. Bigger copies with thousands of accurate data will be rendered useless if you fail to keep it short and simple.

Most important part of clearing the written exam is to stay relaxed. Don’t panic or else you will end up screwing your paper with too much of an effort. Target the short questions first and make sure you get at least 90-95% of them right.

If you clear the written and get a call for the interview round, all you need to do is to be true to yourself and the panel members about the stuff you don’t know. Don’t act smart if you are not; remember those who are grilling you are far smarter than you.

All the best everyone. And do enjoy the life of an IIMCian. It’s going to be the best nine months of your life.
